The negative factors brought about by economic instability, not enough feeding and unfavorable health conditions cause many diseases to appear in oppressed geographies. One of them is cataract disease, which is an eye disease that can be removed with a small operation for us. Cataract is seen as an inevitable disease especially in the Africa, and it condemns more than 60 million people to darkness today. The cataract donation project is a health aid campaign that we, as the European Aid Foundation, are carrying out to combat this disease around the world.

We brought hundreds of our brothers and sisters back to the colors of life with the cataract project, which we started with the slogan “You turn a light so they can see” and which we relaunch every year among our current aid campaigns. The aim of our project, as in all our aid projects, is to bring together those who say “I want to help for cataract surgery” and people who are trapped in darkness due to reasons beyond their control, and to ensure that the aid reaches the real needy correctly by channeling your contributions to our foundation.

What is a cataract?

Our donors who want to donate cataracts often want to have an information about the disease. Cataract is known as the loss of vision over time, as the natural lens of the eye, which is in behind the pupil and provides vision, loses its transparency, and it is generally seen in adults and the elderly in our country. The reason why cataract, which is a disease that everyone fears from, is so common in the African continent, can be listed as follows:

• Microbes and viruses caused by infrastructure problems,
• Sand and dust mix with the air and come into contact with the eyes,
• Exposure to above-normal temperature and direct sunlight, Inability to take the necessary vitamins due to malnutrition,
• Inadequate cleaning needs due to drought and insufficient water resources.

In addition to the reasons listed, financial impossibility and shortage of doctors cause people who are about to lose their sight due to cataract disease or who have lost their eyesight, not being able to have surgery and live with this disease throughout their lives. The only way to get rid of the disease is to have surgery under hygienic conditions.

Cataract surgery donation campaigns are geared towards funding the treatments and health needs of people with the disease. As the European Aid Foundation, we have operated on many of our brothers and sisters who have lost the colors of their lives in African and Asian countries. Together with our donors, we touched the lives doomed to darkness, and became a hope for their desperation.

Why is Cataract Donation Necessary?

Cataract donation plays a big role in preventing and treating disease in African and Asian countries. Although the cost of cataract surgery, which is actually a simple 20-minute operation, is quite affordable for us, it is almost impossible to pay this fee in oppressed geographies. For this reason, the fate of everyone, young or old, who has this disease in Afghanistan, Chad or Burkina Faso, is doomed to darkness. This desperation leads to the perception of the disease as an insoluble disease in the mentioned regions.

In the light of all these reasons, it is necessary for us to donate with the cataract aid campaign cost, which is a small amount, as it gives the opportunity to bring many lives back to their colors. The joy of the lives we touch by giving support, no matter how small, is also very valuable.

What are We Doing as part of the Cataract Aid Campaign?

With the help of cataract surgery we carry through as part of the Asia and Africa cataract project, we aim to give hope to people who have lost their sight due to this disease, and we want to show them that they are not alone. As the European Aid Foundation, we provide aid under the name of cataract donation and cataract aid to other regions and countries, especially Africa and Arakan, where there is 1 doctor for 40,000 people, with the motto of being ‘Door to Open Good’ for everyone who wants to help.

With our cataract project, which takes its place among the current aid campaigns of our foundation every year, we first identify the patients in the countries we visit. Then, our doctors, who perform the general examination of the patients, begin the preparations for the operation for the patients who are suitable for surgery. As a result of an operation that takes about 20 minutes, the patients are rested for a while after the surgery, and their controls are carried out. Then, their eyes are opened again to life and they can see life as clearly as before.

Price of Africa Cataract Surgery

One of the questions asked by our volunteers who want to participate in our cataract donation campaign is ‘How much does cataract surgery cost in Africa?’. The donation cost of cataract surgery performed by our foundation in Asian and African countries is 75 Euros. The cost of a patient’s surgery is almost the same as a one-time purchase from the market for us. As we have mentioned many times before, the unequal distribution of income and impossibilities around the world make this treatment impossible for people, especially in Asian and African countries.

As the European Aid Foundation, we run our project with a fixed treatment fee of 75 Euros every year in order to provide financial support to our donors. Our donors can afford the treatment of a single patient, or they can also provide treatment assistance for more than one patient as they wish.
